The Emergency Department is a site of intense service interactions, unpredictable care loads and expectations, and cost challenges. To address service challenges, it is essential to apply the best delivery concepts in the industry. The Emergency Department Benchmarking Alliance(EDBA) was created for those ED administrators interested in the application of management and service concepts. The Vision Statement of the EDBA is simple: Identification, development, and implementation of future best practices in Emergency Medicine.

The Alliance was founded by Emergency Department leaders seeking solutions to local service issues. It is composed of all disciplines of Emergency Department administrators: physicians, nursing, and management. The chair is Dr. Charles L. Reese, IV, MD from Christiana Care Health Services.

The group has benefited from the input of about 25 of the largest ED's in the central part of the country with a high-quality mission. In the healthcare service industry, all providers are obligated to a continuous process of quality improvement and cost-effectiveness. We share a dedication to quality medical care, patient satisfaction, medical education, and community service. Each Alliance member is asked to host a meeting in their city, with the group having the opportunity to tour the host hospital and its ED. Alliance members can bring any personnel from their site that will benefit from attendance and participation.

EDBA Website

The Alliance has developed an interactive Website, sponsored by Cerner Corporation. This Website is designed to gather service providers in an online collaborative environment to gather performance metrics and advice. The Website will be accessed by at least four categories of users:

  1. The public, seeking information about best practice emergency services. It serves all Emergency Departments when we make EDs work better for patients and communities.
  2. Emergency physicians, nurses and administrators seeking practice solutions.
  3. Members of the EDBA seeking discussion on a given topic either asynchronously or in group meeting sessions.
  4. EDBA members participating in data-sharing who will contribute data (real-time and by batch) and participate in analysis of the data and writing.
There could not be a better time to focus energy on the Emergency Department, at a time when so many citizens are relying on a site of excellent unscheduled health care.

Welcome to the Emergency Department Benchmarking Alliance!
